I noticed a slight rotten egg smell to an egg that I just collected from the nest. It was laid approximately two hours before I collected it, so I know the membrane was dried. The smell remained, although faint, even when the egg was brought to room temperature. Any ideas? Is it rotten? Also, what do people do if an infertile egg is taken out of the incubator and you notice it smells a bit rotten? Cause for alarm? Thanks. One smelled like dogs urine (one of our dogs must have found it before me) it died - EED. Out of the remaining three "smelly" eggs one hatched and two didn't - both EED. We don't worry about "smelly" eggs too much because of the low number we get but if the percentage was higher I would certainly be calling the Vet. Do you wash or wipe your eggs with anything (we use pure alcohol wipes) and if so, do the eggs still smell after cleaning?Regards Col Everett - Lanacoora Ostriches, Wagga Wagga, NSW Australia. : I noticed a slight rotten egg smell to an egg that I just collected from the nest. Over the past 8 years we have developed a system for this farm that works for us. We pick up the eggs as soon as possible after laying, always allowing the protective coating to dry. We pick the up with paper towels an place in disinfected crates. When weighing, washing and candling eggs, we handle the eggs with gloved hands. I firmly suscribe to egg washing and recommend Virkon S by Antec International to wash them in. I make two 1 gallon pans of solution at the recommended dilution and temperature (1:100 at 104*F) I sanitize the eggs as soon a I can after they are collected. In the first pan, I pour some of the solution over the egg and gently scrub with a household nail brush clearing the pores of any dirt. I then hold the egg over the second pan and pour more solution over the egg and place on a rack to air dry. I move the eggs immediately to a cooling room (59*F) and hold for up to a week. We have cut down on the number of smelly eggs by routinely spraying the nest with the Virkon S solution, using a pump sprayer to apply. From my experience, the only eggs that have ever smelled in the incubator are fertile eggs in which the embryo has died. Since I have washed eggs with Virkon S, I have not had and infertile egg that was contaminated (as would be the case in an infertile that smelled. Thanks. Are you sure it wasnt an old egg you just missed. New eggs seldom smell. As far as incubator, you should check it regular and as soon as you detect a smelly egg remove it. They are easy to find just by a quick sniff. A bad egg is obvious as soon as you enter incubator area. I simpley remove them. Do nothing extra and have not had any problems. Just dont ever let one explode in you incubator. And do not let smelly egg remain in incubator, remove it at once. It can be drained and shell retained.
