We have just had a 4 month old chick die from what we believe to be impaction. We have had the birds for a month. It was gaining weight then suddenly lost weight over about a week. We did an amateurish autopsy and found that its gizzard was still packed full of small pebbles which were not the type we had been feeding them. We have had the birds for a month. How long do stones stay in the gizzard? The bird when we opened it was full of yellowish/green colour fluid - it was EVERYWHERE. What and where did this fluid come from? There was also a fairly densely packed wad of brownish grass (like silage) in the entrance to the gizzard. Could this be impacted? It was still feeding at the time of death. The birds are on cow pasture in 3 acre paddocks and also receive a growers mix of 17% crude protein, about 1/2 lb per bird per day. Can you please help us here in New Zealand.

One would expect the fluid ot the stomach to be green after all they are eating grass which is filled with chlorophil which is green. You should also provide an unlimited supply of clean drinking water for the birds. We change our water daily and have about 3 gallons per bird/ per day. Some birds will drink it all, others very little, but that should be their choice, not yours.Hope this answers some questions. There are many feed companies which make ostrich feed ask them how much to feed of their food to get a second opinion.RegardsJere Hitchcock Danielsville, GA (USA) jere@xxxx.xxx-r-elect.com : We have just had a 4 month old chick die from what we believe to be impaction.
